'Emile Sauret and his 24 Etudes-Caprices, Op.64' (Vol.2)
RELEASED ON NAXOS IN MARCH 2018!
Earning the admiration of the most eminent composers of his time, from Brahms and Tchaikovsky to Liszt and Sarasate, Émile Sauret occupies a significant place in the history of the violin. His lively genre pieces (available on 8.572366) were augmented by an extensive cycle of Études-Caprices (Volume 1 is on 8.573704) that remain a testament to his finesse and command. Written to span all twenty-four keys, they encompass subtle expressive qualities as well as drama and technical virtuosity.
The series continues this month with Nazrin Rashidova's recording of Émile Sauret's 24 Études Caprices, Op. 64, Nos. 8-13. She plays Sauret’s own Stradivarius violin, which is named after him (‘The Sauret’). He bought it in 1885 and played it for the rest of his professional life. © Naxos

'Emile Sauret and his 24 Etudes-Caprices, Op.64' (Vol.1)
RELEASED ON NAXOS IN JUNE 2017!
The supreme 19th century violin virtuoso, composer and pedagogue, Emile Sauret carved himself an enviable reputation during his lifetime and was acclaimed by the greatest musicians of the century, including Sarasate, Brahms and Liszt.
However, Sauret himself seems very little known, although he is predominantly remembered by violinists for the fiendishly difficult cadenza he composed to Paganini’s first violin concerto.
Composed during his professorial tenure at the Royal Academy of Music, the 24 Etudes-Caprices are a testament to his technical finesse and are dedicated to his student, the great British virtuoso Marjorie Hayward.
This volume is a first recording in 115 years, since its first publication in 1902.
The CD was featured on Andrew McGregor's Record Review and later live on BBC Radio 3. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08skymc

Moritz MOSZKOWSKI (1854–1925)
Works for Violin and Piano
Five Spanish Dances • Four Pieces • Suite for Two Violins
Nazrin Rashidova, Violin
Daniel Grimwood, Piano
Moritz Moszkowski enjoyed a considerable international reputation as a composer and pianist and was fêted as the natural successor to Chopin. It is a mark of his music’s success that it was arranged for countless ensembles and solo instruments. French violinist Émile Sauret transformed the popular Spanish Dances into virtuoso showpieces filled with all manner of impressive elaborations, Jascha Heifetz similarly turning Etincelles or ‘Sparks’ into something brilliantly light and twinkling. The interaction of two violins makes the Suite highly dramatic, contrasting with the fine lyrical melody of Moszkowski’s Serenata.
Key Features
- Moszkowski’s works with violin—original or in arrangement—tend to appear as part of ‘encore’ programs, the Suite with two violins being something of a chamber music rarity. This substantial program brings together some of his best-loved works in transcriptions by noted violinists, along with original compositions for the instrument.
- Rising star and award-winning violinist Nazrin Rashidova had her Naxos debut in a recording of a program of works by Leopold Godowsky (8.573058) that was described as “outstanding” by Gramophone; The Strad stating that the playing “captures [the music’s] elusive, tantalising combination of insouciant cool and nostalgic intensity to perfection.”
- Pianist Daniel Grimwood is a highly regarded soloist in his own right, reviewed as "Stimulating and revelatory in equal measure" by The Telegraph. His Liszt album from the SFZ Music label made a Daily Telegraph “CD of the Week” and a Gramophone Magazine ‘Editor’s Choice’, and he was the first artist to record for the Edition Peters Sounds label with the complete Nocturnes by Fauré.
